Patriots top Lions 30-28 but suffer a possible major injury

The New England Patriots and Detroit Lions faced off in what is referred to as the Dress Rehearsal the always important 3rd preseason game. Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford both got the majority of the game behind center, and the Patriots took an early blow when Julian Edelman came up lame with a knee injury. He walked off the field into a tent and was looked at before being carted to the locker room.

Brady two plays later found Chris Hogan in the end zone, when the Lions got the ball Malcolm Butler picked the pocket of Golden Tate and Jordan Richards recovered the fumble, and the first play of the drive Brady threw another touchdown to Hogan. After the defense held Stafford and the Lions three and out the Patriots got the ball back and Brady connected on a big bomb to Danny Amendola. Just a few short plays later another one of the Patriots shiny offseason additions running back Mike Gillislee found his way into the end zone with his first touch of the preseason. After a penalty on the extra point, the Patriots moved down to the one-yard line where Gillislee got in for a two point conversion. A lot of time went off the clock with not much action, before Tom Brady threw an interception and on the ensuing drive Stafford took the Lions offense down the field and threw a touchdown to Marvin Jones and 24-7 was the score at halftime.

When they two teams came out for the 2nd half, the Lions got the ball and Stafford took his team straight down the field thanks to a big pass to Marvin Jones, then a touchdown pass to Dwayne Washington. When the Patriots came out to start the 2nd half they put Jimmy Garoppolo in at Quarterback and he went 3 and out. The Lions still with Stafford in once again marched down the field and found Jared Abbrederis for another touchdown. After another three and out from the Patriots, the Lions placed Jake Rudock in the game and led the Lions on another touchdown drive. Finally, Garoppolo and the Patriots got a rhythm going as he was able to take the Patriots down the field but a killer drop by James O’Shaungessey forced them to settle for a field goal. The Patriots defense made a stop on Lions rookie QB Brad Kaaya and Garoppolo got the ball back and got his team in range to get a game winning field goal from Stephen Gostkowski. The Patriots now hold their breath that Julian Edelman is OK and end their preseason next week vs the New York Giants.
