Sunday afternoon in Foxboro Tom Brady and Deshaun Watson led their teams onto the field at Gillette Stadium. The rookie Watson vs the Greatest of All Time Brady, Watson got the first crack at the ball and went three and out, when Brady got it for the first time Brandin Cooks made an early catch of the year candidate catch putting the Patriots in range for an early touchdown which they got when Brady found Rob Gronkowski in the end zone. The Texans helped big time by a PI call on Stephon Gillmore of the Patriots got a field goal on their first drive. After holding the Patriots three and out, Watson threw a beautiful touchdown pass to Bruce Ellington giving the Texans the lead.
At the start of the 2nd quarter, things appeared to go south for the Patriots when Brady was sacked by Jadevon Clowney then tripped on his running backs feet, but the Patriots regained momentum when Gillmore intercepted Watson just a few plays later Brady found Chris Hogan for another touchdown. After the Texans went down again, Whitney Mercilus busted around Nate Solder and strip-sacked Brady, Jadevon Clowney caught it out of the air and brought it back for a touchdown giving the Texans a 20-14 lead. Brady and the Patriots responded right away when they got a big catch from Danny Amendola and a couple plays later Brady found Hogan for a long Touchdown putting the Patriots back on top.
On the first possession of the third quarter, the Patriots once again showed off their shiny new toy in Brandin Cooks as they finally got what they were looking for on a 42 yard TD between Brady and the lighting fast Cooks. And once again the Texans responded Watson threw a beautiful touchdown to Ryan Griffin.
The Texans defense stalled the Patriots from there holding them to two three and outs, then the Patriots defense came up big holding the Texans to a field goal. On the ensuing drive, Brady took his team right down the field getting big plays from Gronkowski and Amendola, before eventually hooking up with Cooks for the go-ahead score. Watson made a big rookie mistake on the next drive when he got a big gain, but didn’t manage the clock properly and it cost the Texans a shot at the win. Tom Brady does it again.
