After another Super Bowl win for Tom Brady and the New England Patriots, the Patriots lost their starting running back LeGarrette Blount in free agency. This left fantasy owners wondering who would be the guy to own in the New England backfield. Blount last year finished 10th amongst Running Backs in PPR leagues and was first in the league with 18 rushing touchdowns. After the loss of Blount people were looking towards James White, who had an incredible Super Bowl performance with over 110 yards receiving and three touchdowns. But New England decided to bolster their backfield and sign free agents Mike Gillislee from Buffalo and Rex Burkhead from Cincinnati, leading to a bunch of debates about who would be the new number one guy in New England. All of the Patriot backs are seen as third down backs and all have similar skill sets and with no real answers coming out of the preseason we looked for Game 1 against the Chiefs to give us some answers.
After the Patriots loss last night to the Chiefs we finally got our answer, Mike Gillislee and James White. While he only received five more carries than White, Gillislee was the workhorse for the New England backfield and was the primary back used in goal line sets scoring all three rushing touchdowns for the New England Offense. White was used more in the Hurry Up but was their lead back in receiving catching three balls for 30 yards. If Gillislee keeps up this production he can finish as a strong RB2 on the season and James White a solid Flex play in PPR formats. Both players should continue to see success with Tom Brady at the helm in what should be one of the best offenses in the league this season.
